Job Responsibilities

Position Summary


Use machinery to move construction materials, earth, and other heavy materials at construction sites.  Operate equipment that clears and grades land to prepare it for construction of roads, buildings and bridges.  Use machines to dig trenches to lay or repair pipelines and hoist heavy construction materials. May operate excavation and loading machines equipped with scoops, shovels, or buckets that dig sand, gravel, earth, or similar materials and load it into trucks or onto conveyors.  In addition, may operate trench excavators, road graders and drive and control industrial trucks or tractors equipped with forklifts or booms for lifting materials or with hitches for pulling trailers.  May also operate and maintain air compressors, pumps, and other power equipment at construction sites.  Also set up and inspect equipment, make adjustments, and perform some maintenance and minor repairs. 



  • Inspect equipment daily.  Fueling of equipment. Check all operating systems.  Ensure fire extinguisher, flares or other applicable safety equipment are aboard and in working order.  Report equipment that is inoperable to Crew lead or Superintendent.
  • Apply mechanical aptitude and experience operating related mobile equipment.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and for the safety of workers in the immediate area.
  • Follow North Wind and client procedures.
  • Maintain work log or other project paperwork, as applicable.
  • Maintain contemporaneous timesheets and submit on a weekly basis.
  • Work independently or with others to complete daily assignments.

Physical Demands

Typically requires working in outdoor conditions and possibly in inclement weather. Need to be in good physical condition and have good sense of balance, the ability to judge distance, and strong eye-hand coordination.  May require the ability to work at heights.

Operator I:   High School Equivalency in reading, writing and math.  0-2 years of relevant mechanized equipment op exp.

Operator II:  High School Equivalency and 1-4 years of relevant mechanized equipment operating experience.

Operator III: High School Equivalency and 2-6 years of relevant mechanized equipment operating experience.

Operator IV: High School Equivalency and 4-8 years of relevant mechanized equipment operating experience.

Operator V:  High School Equivalency and 8-10 years of relevant mechanized equipment operating experience


Current OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPPER Training.

Current First Aid/CPR training preferred.

Familiar with site safety program and training requirements.

Obtain and maintain operator’s certifications on required pieces of equipment.  Maintain operator’s card(s) in possession.

Must have valid Driver’s License and a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) may be required
