Job Description


DESIGNER / DRAFTER - Electrical Instrumentation and Controls (EI&C)


Complete engineering design products and prepares assembly and detail drawings, following the general instructions and directions of an engineer/designer.  Develops various calculations such as circuit breaker and fuse sizing, cable size, conduit size, conduit fill and lighting levels, frequently using charts and tables.  Prepares bills of material and specifications.  Reports to the Manager, Design Engineering.



Essential Functions Statement(s)


  • Prepares single line diagrams, control wiring diagrams and cable/conduit lists.
  • Prepares P&IDs, process and pneumatic tubing drawings, instrument installation details.
  • Prepares layouts, and detail drawings for electrical distribution to new or improved process equipment.
  • Prepares initial drawings and monitors construction results.
  • Provides construction support and completes field walk-downs
  • Analyzes various design requirements and recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions.
  • Provides information when required for cost estimating, such as layouts and processing sketches.
  • Prepares presentation graphics/materials as required.


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the follow-up of prototype construction with outside vendors. 
  • Secures quotations and expedites materials and delivery.

  • One (1) to two (2) years of college or trade school education in electrical/mechanical drawing and related areas is helpful.
  • Well-rounded, practical experience may be substituted for formal training.
  • Able to move from design concept to finished design, including layouts and drawings.
  • Minimum seven (7) years of progressive on-the-job experience.
  • AutoCAD experience required.
  • Familiar with applicable national consensus codes, e.g., NFPA 70 (NEC), IEEE. ISA and ANSI


Other Skills/Abilities:  Must be able to obtain and maintain appropriate DOE Credentials


Preferred: Experience at a Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear facility.    Construction, startup and operation experience is a plus. 


Communication:  Ability to effectively communicate verbally and with all levels of management, site personnel and our client.


Computer Skills: Intermediate IT Knowledge – Must possess significant functional computer skills including use of mainstream business software including but not limited to: Microsoft Office 2016, Adobe Professional; Internet navigation

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
