Civil / Structural Engineer

Department:

FLSA Status: Exempt

Reports To: Design Engineering Manager

Grade/Level: N/A

Amount of Travel Required: up to 10%

 

 

POSITION SUMMARY: 

Initiates and completes engineering designs of civil and structural (steel and concrete) components and systems following the general instructions and directions of department manager.  These components and systems may include but are not limited to:

 

  • Structural Steel, consisting of pipe supports, platforms, cranes and small buildings
  • Concrete, consisting of slab on grade foundations and elevated re-enforced slabs
  • Civil, consisting of various area drainage and grading

 

Develops various calculations related to material stresses and NPH (e.g., seismic and wind) criteria to support design concepts.  Additionally, prepares calculations, reports, specifications and bills of material.  Reports to the Manager, Design Engineering.  Establishes and achieves schedule driven deadlines for multiple, and competing, tasks.  Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. May lead and direct the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develops initial design concepts
  • Prepares calculations related to initial design concepts
  • Prepares specifications and reports to implement design concepts
  • Prepares and develops key parameters for use by designers
  • Reviews and approves initial drawings on assigned equipment and systems
  • Analyzes various design requirements and recommends possible solutions or alternate constructions
  • Demonstrated verbatim compliance with design and operating procedures
  • Provides information when required for cost estimating, such as layouts and processing sketches labor estimates and cost data

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the follow-up of prototype construction with outside vendors
  • Secures quotations and expedites materials and delivery
  • Reviews operating procedures
  • Prepares presentation graphics/materials as required

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

 

Education: Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE)

 

License:  Professional registration is required.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience.
  • Ability to transition from design concept to finished design and field implementation, including review and checking of drawings performed by designers and drafters.
  • Review and approve calculations and drawings generated by third parties (i.e. subcontractors and suppliers)
  • Demonstrated success in a verbatim compliance environment.
  • Familiar with national consensus codes and standards. (i.e., AISC 13th edition, ASCE 7, ACI 318, IBC and ASME BTH-1).

 

Preferred: Experience at a Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear facility.    Construction, startup and operation experience is a plus.  Structural software experience (e.g., STAAD Pro) is highly desired.

 

Communication:  Ability to effectively communicate verbally and with all levels of management, site personnel and our client.

 

Computer Skills: Intermediate IT Knowledge – Must possess significant functional computer skills including use of mainstream business software including but not limited to: Microsoft Office 2016, Adobe Professional; Internet navigation

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
