Job Responsibilities
North Wind Portage is seeking a Lead Mechanic on the UMTRA project.

?Lead Mechanics act as subject matter experts and perform service, repair, and maintenance of heavy equipment used for the Moab Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project, at either the Moab or Crescent Junction sites, including, but not limited to, heavy duty trucks and trailers, bulldozers, excavators, forklifts, water trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, trailers and small engines. Lead Mechanics, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, coordinate and direct equipment repairs and maintenance activities at each site. The work is performed through the application of a body of knowledge and specific certifications that denote expertise in heavy equipment maintenance and repair.

This position includes oversight of mechanics/oilers performing more routine and simple tasks. Lead Mechanics are responsible for more complex assignments and repairs.

The Lead Mechanic’s duties include, but are not limited to:
• Diagnosing, servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing on various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, generators, and pneumatic systems.
• Performing equipment service maintenance requirements, including oil and hydraulic changes, according to manufacturers’ recommendations.
• Maintaining inventory of parts and support supplies to perform routine equipment maintenance.
• Maintaining service records and preparing cost materials estimates.
• Overhauling engines, replacing engines, and rebuilding components.
• Keeping tools, equipment, and work area clean, organized, and in good working condition.
• Road testing equipment.
• Welding experience preferred but not required.
• Other related duties as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma

?• 10 plus years of heavy equipment service, repair, and maintenance. Diesel mechanic certification preferred.
• Knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair of heavy equipment.
• Skilled in the use of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment, welding equipment, use of hand tools for repairs, and servicing of heavy equipment.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
• Familiar with computer diagnostic programs and databases.
• Ability to read manuals and schematics.
• Ability to communicate professionally with other mechanics about repair work needed.
• Ability to qualify as a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Radiation Worker II and complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) worker qualification, and pass a HAZWOPER/respirator user medical exam.
• Ability to work in different types of personal protective equipment (half-face, full-face respirators, Tyvek, etc.) while performing various tasks/activities (e.g., climbing, walking, stopping, etc.) in different work environments (e.g., cold, heat, etc.).
• Physically able to perform job tasks, including lifting up to 50 lbs alone.
• Experience in work environments with exposure to all weather conditions and temperature extremes.
• Motivated and willing to work as part of a team and perform multiple job functions.
• Ability to read and comply with project direction contained in project-specific plans and procedures.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• May be required to pass a pre-employment background check.
• Must be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends, and night shifts, pending demand.
• Experience on UMTRA type projects is highly desirable.
