Job Description
The Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS) in the Physical and Life Sciences Directorate (PLS) has an opening for a Laboratory Technician to support the Marshall Islands Program. The Marshall Islands Program conducts research and monitoring on the environmental behavior of residual fallout radionuclides at former nuclear test sites in the Marshall Islands and requires the successful disposal of legacy waste materials held by the program. This program requires the Laboratory Technician have attention to detail and the ability to maintain lab books and enter information in word and excel files. The successful candidate will Interact effectively with programmatic, RHWM and ES&H support staff. Under supervision, the successful candidate will provide technical support for the triage, handling, primary treatment, and disposition of regulated programmatic waste generated from analysis of leftover environmental samples. This position reports to the Program Leader of the Marshall Islands Dose Assessment and Radioecology Program through the CAMS Director.

This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties
-Interact with Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management (RHWM) and Environmental Safety and Health (EH&H) team members on waste disposal operations.
-Keep accurate and complete records of managed materials in accordance with Standards Operating Procedures (SOPs) and RHWM rules and regulations.
-Operate and maintain laboratory equipment to include drying ovens for sterilization of soil.
-Successful completion of disposal of legacy materials
-Able to manage multi-tasking in supporting other programmatic needs.
-Strictly follow verbal and written directions.
-Develops trustworthy relationship with RHWM and ES&H support staff.
-Implements a system for efficient and systematic disposal of legacy materials held by the program.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Marginal Duties
-Provide advanced technical support for preparation (drying, homogenization and canning) of environmental samples for radiometric analysis (alpha-, beta-, and gamma-spectrometry, mass-spectrometric analysis (AMS, ICP-MS) and/or elemental analysis (ICP-MS).
-Provide general lab oversight for Shipping and Receiving operations under the Marshall Islands Program.
 
Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Associate’s degree in a Computer or Engineering related field, or equivalent combination of technical training and experience.
-Experience multi-tasking and prioritizing workload in a fast-paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.
-Basic experience with personal computers, software, and database systems with the ability to troubleshoot and solve basic technical problems with mobile devices and computers.
-Knowledge of electronics terminology, standards, procedures, and techniques.
-Experience maintaining clear and accurate records with an attention to detail.
-Demonstrated ability providing customer service and maintaining professionalism.
-Knowledge of the skills needed for a customer support role, to include a focus on listening, rapport building, good communication skills, and courtesy and patience.
-Perform other duties as assigned.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Experience and knowledge of administering, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing computers or mobile devices.
-Experience working with customers, addressing issues, and managing customer concerns and requests over the phone or in person.
-Experience updating policies and procedures or knowledge base articles.

Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Minimum of 2 years of college or equivalent work experience 
-Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
-Ability to work in a team-oriented environment and work effectively with others
-Fine manipulative motor skills
-Licensed to drive a motor vehicle
-Typing or keyboarding up to 3 hours per day
-Adhere to LLNS Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Safety Protocols

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Previous work experience in waste management at LLNL
-Fork truck driver’s license

Special Requirements 
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: P (position will be cleared to this level).
