Job Description
The Mechanics of Materials Group (MoM) of the Materials Engineering Division (MED) has an opening for a Mechanical Technician to support ongoing programmatic activities. The successful candidate will interact with scientists, engineers, technicians and other support personnel. Under general supervision, the successful candidate will provide technical support for mechanical testing projects including design, fabrication, assembly of special testing hardware, selection and use of sensors and electronic instrumentation. The successful candidate will operate mechanical testing systems, perform  experiments, acquire data, and write test reports.

This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties
- Perform mechanical testing experiments using electro-mechanical or servo-hydraulic test machines.
- Measure and record displacement, load, stress and strain using computer-based data acquisition
systems.
- Identify alternative approaches to mechanical testing problems using individual creativity and
judgement.
- Use mechanical design, engineering and scientific software on computer systems to produce
documentation and graphics.
- Evaluate and characterize materials and manufacturing processes in support of mechanical testing
experiments.
- Provide general technical support in design, fabrication and assembly of mechanical hardware.
- Provide in-depth detailed reporting of test results.
- Follow and adhere to written, operational and safety procedures in the course of completing job
assignments working independently and as part of a team.
- Work efficiently to perform laboratory work with deliberate attention to detail for safety, security, and
accuracy.
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and
policies.
- Performed other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- A.S. degree in Engineering Technology and/or degree/certificate in mechanical, industrial, or
manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- General knowledge of mechanical testing methods. (Compression and tensile testing)
- Demonstrated knowledge of principals in engineering hardware design, fabrication, and drafting
practices.
- Ability to perform engineering calculations, data reduction, and data analysis.
- Experience in machining using lathes, mills, band saws or other basic machine shop tools.
- Experience with personal computers and associated software (Microsoft Office Suite,
Graphing/Plotting software) for documenting experimental results.
- Experience in mechanical measurement and mechanical assembly of components.
- Ability to multi-task and must demonstrate proficient written, verbal communication and interpersonal
skills necessary to communicate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Demonstrated knowledge of operating principles of strain gages, load cells and displacement
measuring devices.
- Demonstrated knowledge of operation of mechanical testing systems or other computer controlled
equipment.
- Proficient user of CAD software (CREO or SolidWorks)
- Demonstrated general knowledge of electronics. (Familiar with voltage, current and resistance
measurement techniques, Ohm’s law and a general understanding of basic electrical circuits).

Special Requirements 
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
