Job Description
The NIF & PS Directorate has a need for a Short Pulse Laser Technologist (LEOT), to support programs in the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF & PS) Directorate.  The selected candidate will provide technical support for the Kilowatt Technologies Test Laboratory, but may also work on other short pulse or high-power laser systems in the directorate. Under minimal supervision, the successful candidate will provide technical expertise to the training of technicians on complex short pulse laser systems operating in the femtosecond to picosecond range, high power diode arrays, and thermal load test stations.  Assignment involves the development of procedures for troubleshooting, maintenance, and operation of complex laser systems. The successful candidate will interact with project leaders, technicians, designers, scientists, and engineers.

Due to the vast and varying types of experiments, NIF is a 24/7 operational facility. This position may require the Engineering Technician VI to have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. This position may also require working alternate schedules such as 4/10’s or 12 hour shifts. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties
- Provide guidance to associates and technicians on the operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of complex short pulse laser systems, high power diode lasers, and associated supporting infrastructure
- Develop comprehensive operational procedures
- Develop troubleshooting guide  
- Develop maintenance plan to include routine and periodic maintenance   
- Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with Environmental, Safety, and Health policies and procedures.
- Provide advanced support for the development, setup, operation, repair and maintenance of diagnostic equipment.
- Train staff to work with experimenters and engineers to independently perform a variety of experiments. 
 

Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- AA/AS degree in electronics and/or electro-optic technology or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
- Advanced knowledge and skills related to short pulse laser systems
- Advanced knowledge and skills related to high power diode operation
- Advanced knowledge and skills related to alignment of optical stretchers and compressors
- Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Experience with Electro-optics systems and components, CCD imaging systems, and data acquisition
- Experience with data acquisition, controls, interlocks, and mechanical hardware.
- Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment with multi-discipline personnel.
- Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communications skills.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Experience with short-pulse diagnostics including spectrometers, energy meters, cameras, Frequency Resolved Optical Gatings (FROGs), and auto-correlators.
- Experience with programming tools such as MatLab and LabView.
- Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks.
- Highly organized, reliable, and dependable with an ability to work on a variety of concurrent activities.
- Previous technical lead or supervisory experience.

Special Requirements 
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
