Job Description
The Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED) within the Engineering Directorate, has an opening for a Mechanical Engineer. The successful candidate will participate in new and ongoing projects providing engineering support for diverse programs in the area of National Defense.  The work will be in support of Life Extension Programs and warhead modernization efforts. The successful candidate will advise on the successful completion of projects and contribute to the development of organizational goals and objectives.  The successful candidate will provide advice and coordination to LLNL on topics ranging from new initiatives to maintenance of the current stockpile. This position will require experience and knowledge of the people and politics in Washington, D.C., and will utilize SME knowledge to gather information of use to the Laboratory and allow the LLNL perspective to be better communicated for matters related to National Security. In addition, the successful candidate will provide advice on technological solutions for Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, as well as participate in special assignments. This position reports directly to the Associate Division Leader for Life Extension Programs in DTED.

This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. The successful candidate will be required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties
- Design mechanical and/or electromechanical systems.
- Provide guidance on structural, thermal, hydraulic or dynamics modeling of mechanical systems.
- Consult on testing of installed systems, analyze failures to determine cause and recommend and/or perform corrective action.
- Contribute to proposals and white papers to target new opportunities.
- Contribute to the preparation of health and safety documentation that is aligned with the Integrated Safety Management (ISM) requirement and participate in design and Management Prestart Reviews.
- Consult on project interfaces and deployment, interfacing with other organizations internal and external to the Laboratory (will not represent LLNS).
- Apply advanced concepts to mechanical and electromechanical designs.
- Apply advanced structural, dynamic or thermal-hydraulic concepts to solve complex problems.
- Present proposals to sponsor organizations and LLNL program leaders (will not represent LLNS).
- Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.
 

Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- BS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. 
- Experience in weapon and mechanical design.
- Demonstrated knowledge of behavior of materials, heat transfer, fluids, system dynamics, structural stress and deformation and controls theory.
- Experience in prototype development and testing. 
- Experience critically analyzing mechanical designs and successfully implementing them in the form of prototypes. 
- Experience with hardware design and analysis. 
- Demonstrated proficient communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to prepare and present proposals, papers, reports and document results. 
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate work and goals on multiple simultaneous projects effectively.
- Demonstrated knowledge of advanced mechanical/electromechanical design.
- Demonstrated knowledge of advanced structural, dynamic, and thermal-hydraulic analysis.
- Demonstrated advanced verbal and written communications skills necessary to run productive project teams and to positively represent LLNL in sponsor interactions.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. 
- Substantial experience in the design of mechanical system development. 
- Experience as a team member on multidisciplinary technical projects. 
- Experience in hardware fabrication, field installation and testing. 
- Experience in defining and negotiating engineering requirements. 
- Knowledge of Integrated Safety Management.

Special Requirements 
Pre-Placement Medical Exam:
A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (position will be cleared to this level).
