Job Description
The Joining Group of the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate has an opening for a Chemistry and Materials Technologist. The successful candidate will provide technical support for experimental systems working with a variety of materials. The position will utilize analysis equipment and/or instrumentation related to characterization of those materials. The successful candidate will provide technical support to scientists, engineers, and senior technical personnel for materials characterization, experimental development, data collection, and testing.

This position may require the successful candidate have the flexibility to work overtime, shift and/or weekends to accomplish goals. Thus successful candidate will required to pass various on-site training modules to pursue work assignments.

Essential Duties
-Provide general technical analysis and/or processing support.
-Measure, test, and analyze materials and substances following standard, and at times unique, procedures and techniques.
-Work with a variety of materials, including the sage and effective operation in inert gas environment gloveboxes and/or fume hoods.
-Prepare design modifications for moderately complex experiments or processes.
-Use analytical and other instruments such as microscopes, metal powder characterizations equipment, survey meters, and air sampling equipment
-Maintain a detailed notebook of laboratory project processes and procedures.
-Acquire and analyze complex experimental data.
-Prepare summary reports, report results, identify problems, and plans solutions for advanced technical problems.
-Contribute to processes, procedures, standard operating procedures, and qualification testing.
-Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
-Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Associate degree in Chemistry/Materials or an equivalent combination of education and previous related experience.
-General understanding of chemistry and materials.
-Intermediate skills and experience operating a variety of instruments and scientific equipment.
-Intermediate skills and experience analyzing basic experimental data and maintaining accurate laboratory notebooks.
-Proficient computer skills including knowledge of standard software and database programs.
-Demonstrated effective communication, interpersonal skills and a strong ability to work as part of a team.
-Able to work effectively with all levels of management, technical, engineering, and scientific staff.

Desired Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
-Advanced specialized technical expertise in one or a few areas of chemistry, materials science, engineering, or environmental technology.
-Experience maintaining, calibrating, and performing measurements using scientific instruments.
-Ability to be respirator protection qualified.
-Knowledge of the use and maintenance of HEPA systems, fume hoods and gloveboxes.
-Experience utilizing CAD programs.
Special Requirements
Pre-Placement Medical Exam: A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.
Per-employment drug test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Subcontractor.
Anticipated Clearance Level: Q (posting will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Qualified applicants must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy.
