Job Description

The Carlsbad Technical Assistance Contract (CTAC), operated by North Wind-Portage, has an immediate need for a technical expert with knowledge and experience in the area of Software Quality Assurance (SQA) and computer programming to provide support to the Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO), Office of Quality Assurance (OQA).  

This position will be located in Carlsbad, New Mexico at the Skeen-Whitlock Building.  However, auditors will be required to travel to various TRU waste generator sites and other facilities across the United States to participate in audits and surveillances on a regular basis. Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be US Citizens and will be required to pass a drug and alcohol screening.  


Quality Assurance Assessments:

  • Perform internal and external quality assurance assessments for the WIPP program and program partners in accordance with NQA-1 and NQA-2 requirements;
  • Plan and coordinate logistics necessary to conduct assessments at 
    the WIPP site and at TRU waste generator sites at various locations;
  • Evaluate SQA programs under the purview of DOE CBFO;
  • Prepare assessment plans and SQA-related reports;
  • Develop software QA-related checklists and summarize assessment 
    results; and
  • Interface with state and federal regulatory agencies.

Software Quality Assurance:

  • Generate trending reports for CBFO OQA
  • Assist in developing project SQA-related documents
  • Perform reviews of SQA plans and other QA-related documents 
  • Assist CBFO OQA SQA personnel with SQA work activities
  • Identify potential projects or additional work scope on existing SQA 
    projects or programs
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of CBFO’s corrective 
    action system.


  • Provide technical SQA expertise to CBFO OQA or other CBFO offices 
    as requested
  • Bachelor of Science degree in physical science, computer science, information technology, engineering, or related technical discipline (as approved by the Contracting Officer)
  • Five years of experience in the nuclear industry
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be sitting for long periods of time in an office environment, but will also be required to stand, walk, and talk or hear. The employee is often required to use hands or fingers to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. 

The majority of work is conducted indoors in an office environment.  Work is also conducted outdoors in the form of on-site assessment activities held at nuclear facilities.

Ability to work overtime is expected.
